Does Your Vacuum Cleaner Affect Your Health?

January 19th, 2012

A lot of money is spent in finding ways to eliminate allergies, or at least, limit the amount of allergens present in the home. One of the ways people fight back is by using vacuum cleaners to remove allergens, such as dust, from the home. The problem is, that many vacuums don’t eliminate the allergens, rather they spit them back out through the filter. This goes even for the vacuums that are supposed to remove 99% of the allergens from the air, in fact, the study showed only a small percent difference between the special filters and the regular ones.

“All released some bacteria, dust, and allergens back into the air. Newer and more expensive vacuum cleaners generally caused less indoor air pollution than older, cheaper models, the study showed. Vacuums with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters released only slightly lower levels of dust and bacteria than vacuums that did not use these special filters. HEPA filters are supposed to remove 99.9% of the pollen, animal dander, and even bacteria from the air.”
