Calf Muscle Flexibility Check

Objective: Determine flexibility of calf muscles.

Description: Through a simple "squat" position check we can get a basic assessment of the length of the calf muscles. You will need loose fitting clothing.

  • Step One: Stand with both feet facing forward, shoulder width apart.
  • Step Two: Place your arms out in front of you with the elbows locked. This will help keep you from falling backward.
  • Step Three: Slowly try to sit down toward your heels. Your heels must stay flat on the ground. If your heels come of the ground the test is invalid.
  • Step Four: If heel cord length is adequate, you should be able to approximate your buttocks and your heels. If this test is difficult for you, you should start a flexibility program (observe how D'On - above - can get all the way down, but James - below - can only get down about 1/3 of the way. Who do you think needs to stretch their calf muscles?!?).
